EILEAN DONAN CASTLE - April, 2015, Kyle of Lochlash, Scotland
I had an opportunity to work in the U.K. and took a few extra days to visit Scotland. Typical Scottish weather, you never know what you are going to get and this was my third attempt at getting a clear shot of the castle. I took this at about 9:30 p.m. and within a couple of hours a storm blew in and I felt lucky to get this picture. The name Eilean Donan, or Island of Donan, is named after a 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD. From the mid 13th century, this area was a “Sea Kingdom” of the Lord of the Isles where the sea was the main highway and the power of feuding clan chiefs was determined by the number of men and galleys or “birlinns” at their disposal. Eilean Donan offered the perfect defensive position.
